Broadway mask rules: All the shows in New York that require masks, vaccinations, and Covid tests
Find out details on mask and vaccination requirements to attend Broadway shows.
While Broadway theatres may be gearing up for reopening shows at full capacity in the coming weeks, going to the theatre won’t be back to normal just yet. In order for the safety of all parties in the theatre, protocols have been put in place to hopefully slow the spread of Covid-19 on Broadway and across New York.
Previously, proof of vaccination and mandatory mask-wearing at all Broadway theatres was required through April 30. Now, vaccination proof is no longer required, and mask-wearing is also optional at most Broadway theatres beginning July 1.
What protocols will Broadway shows take if someone tests positive?
According to an August 26, 2021 report by Broadway News, if a person involved in a Broadway production tests positive for Covid-19, the person or people with the virus will isolate, and the venue will be thoroughly cleaned. Especially if multiple cases arise, contact tracing and sequencing will be employed to determine whether the virus was transmitted in the building and who will have been exposed. Audiences will be notified on a need-to-know basis about necessary precautions depending on where transmission likely occurred. If in-building transmission is deemed likely or understudies are unavailable to fill in for cast or crew members who are out with isolated Covid-19 cases, a show may temporarily go dark.
What vaccine requirements are needed for Broadway shows?
Most Broadway shows no longer require proof of vaccination; certain shows still require it for audiences sitting in the seats closest to the performers. See below for the specific requirements for each Broadway show.
What mask requirements are needed for Broadway shows?
Most Broadway shows have a mask-optional policy for audiences of all ages, but certain shows still require masks for audiences sitting in the seats closest to the performers, and others have specific mask-required performances for those who feel most comfortable watching a show with other masked individuals.
To help make it easier, we’ve listed all the current vaccine and mask-wearing requirements and Covid protocols for Broadway shows in 2022. This article is continually updated as policies change and new shows are announced.
